Cafe in the Park

“Ticks so may boxes. Locally sourced foods, ethical menu, upcycled furniture, true community base – from early morning dog walkers to families, community initiatives. Delicious fresh food (of course)! All dwarfed (for me) by the time, effort and patience of staff – very much led from the top – to the volunteers who work there, all of whom have challenges or learning difficulties. This is not an occasional initiative, but an intrinsic part of the cafe, whose skills and progress are applauded by their families and a completely normal part of cafe life for their patrons.”

“This deservedly popular vegetarian restaurant, frequented by non- vegetarians as much as vegetarians, serves delicious, interesting food which is sourced locally wherever possible. It is also a Fairtrade eating house, proving in its menu, the high quality of “local and fair” produce. As well as serving tasty, nutritious lunches, its cakes are wonderful, all made on the premises, and it has themed evening dinners monthly, often with live music, and also runs small but interesting deli on site. This atmospheric quirky family-run restaurant in an old building on the cobbled street, with an open fire in winter, is brilliant!”

Their ethical approach is 360 degrees, from sustainable, ethical, and local produce; supporting the local community; championing other local or sustainable producers; supporting wider initiatives such as Women in Leadership; to actually being ethical to customers, for example committing not to exploit them by raising prices for Valentines. With all this the atmosphere in the restaurant is fun, relaxed, and friendly; the food, consistently fantastic; the service, faultless.”

Yeo Valley HQ Canteen

“This is a thoroughly ethical restaurant sourcing seasonal and local food and ensuring they have zero waste to landfill. The building is kept warm using biofuel and the layout (big canteen tables) encourages people to talk and connect with others. As well as been a fantastic work canteen they open it to the general public and run special events to encourage sustainability. It is also decorate in a really creative and quirky way which makes it look like it’s not taking itself too seriously and puts everyone at ease with the humour. And the food tastes fabulous.”
