By Takeshi Shimotaya, Executive Director, Sustainable Restaurant Association, Japan

The Sustainable Restaurant Association Japan held the Food Made Good Japan Awards 2021 on 15th November 2021 at MY Shokudo Hall & Kitchen in Otemachi, Tokyo. Fifty people attended, both at the venue and online.

The awards showcased and rewarded restaurants and cafes that have excelled and the 10 key areas of the Food Made Good Framework, implementing innovative ideas. The member restaurants that achieved the highest scores in their Food Made Good Sustainability Rating were rewarded with the grand award and category awards (Sourcing, Society, and Environment).

The winners of the awards were as follows:

  • Grand award: haishop cafe (Yokohama)
  • Category award [Procurement: KITCHEN MANE (Yokohama)
  • Category award [Society]: Kayanoya Restaurant (Fukuoka)
  • Category award [Environment]: BOTTEGA BLUE (Hyogo)

These award-winning restaurants not only continued to recognize the importance of sustainability during the Covid-19 pandemic, but also demonstrated the actions they implemented to demonstrate how they are proactively working to implement and embed the activities required by the Food Made Good Sustainability Rating in Sourcing, Environment, and Society.

A sustainable food system is still in its early stages in Japan and it will require a joint effort by restaurants and consumers to promote the concept. In order for a restaurant to promote its sustainability, it is important to create an environment in which the restaurant promoting sustainability is selected by consumers by communicating the importance of sustainability to consumers and gaining a better understanding

With this, the first Food Made Good Japan Awards 2021, SRA Japan has brought together and connected restaurants, companies, and suppliers that promote sustainability, while involving consumer. It’s our hope and goal to work with the SRA in the UK and Food Made Good to expand the movement globally to promote sustainable dining.
