Opportunity for takeaway restaurants to prove they’re Good to Go

The race is on to find the ideas and innovations that have had the biggest impact on the foodservice sector in the last year, as the Sustainable Restaurant Association launches its 2018 Food Made Good Awards.

The 17 Food Made Good Awards reward restaurants and foodservice businesses whose extraordinary accomplishments in the last year have driven progress in the industry and demonstrated that food can be made delicious, ethical and sustainable.

In recognition of the huge growth in delivery and takeaway, already worth £10bn a year, the SRA is looking to reward a business whose main focus is takeaway (more than 50%). It’s an opportunity to highlight ways in which they are driving the sector forward – whether that’s helping customers use the power of their appetites wisely, pioneering sustainable packaging options or forging a new positive delivery model.

The SRA announced earlier this year a continuation of its partnership with Just Eat and its restaurant partners over the next year. The SRA will provide in-depth support to a test group of businesses, understanding their individual plastic challenges, helping them find alternatives and mapping out a journey towards operating plastic-free. These successes and ongoing challenges will then be shared with the whole Just Eat network.

Chris’s Fish and Chips in Barwell, Leicestershire, won the inaugural Good to Go Award in 2017, impressing the judges with its focus on sustainable sourcing and waste reduction, in particular. And owner Stratis Kyriacou informs customers of the boat which caught their fish and the farmer who grew the potatoes for the chips.

Andrew Stephen, Chief Executive of the SRA, said: “With almost nine out of ten diners wanting restaurants to create menus that help them use their appetites wisely, and heightened consumer awareness of issues like plastic and food waste, there’s never been a better time for restaurants to showcase the ways in which they’re addressing the major issues affecting the food system. The Food Made Good Awards provide the perfect platform for the best sustainable innovators of our time.”

Ten of the award categories are built around the SRA’s Sustainability Framework, highlighting best practice in the ten areas that make up a ‘good’ restaurant or foodservice business. These awards are only open to SRA members.
