Esporao (Barwell & Jones)

Esporâo, Drinks Business Sustainability Award Winner 2013, is a sustainable winery located in the heart of the Alentejo region of Portugal where renowned winemaker David Baverstock and his team produce a wide range of award winning wines at a variety of price points. Owned by the Roquette family, whose commitment to sustainability is a true passion, Esporoâo’s journey to sustainability is about the three cornerstones to sustainability; Social, Environmental and Economic. It is a long term strategy. Among its many sustainable measures, Esporão offers education for its employees such as free English classes, placement in local daycare for the staff’s children and staff lunches sourced from the organic vegetable garden grown on the estate. Esporão’s aim is to adapt all agricultural activity to organic methods achieved by the preservation of almost 200 endemic Portuguese grape varieties in an ampelographic vineyard; the creation of wildlife corridors and installation of bat nesting boxes around the estate. A man-made dam has been constructed known as the Caridad dam, which further enables effective irrigation systems for the vines and has attracted 111 species of wildlife to the estate. Esporão supports the local economy with their ethical business code that includes paying suppliers before deadlines to help cash flow. Wine are available nationwide via Coe Vintners and Matthew Clark. For further information on their additional sustainable measures please visit
